Car MOT Mansfield
What is an MOT test?
The MOT is a legally required yearly inspection for most vehicles once they are three years old. It is not a substitute for regular vehicle servicing, as it only confirms that your vehicle is considered roadworthy on the day of the test. Driving without a valid MOT can lead to a fine of up to £1,000.

What is checked during an MOT?
During the test, a qualified mechanic at an appointed Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)-approved centre will perform a comprehensive series of checks on your vehicle. Key areas of inspection include:
- Brakes: The condition, performance, and efficiency of your braking system are tested, including the anti-lock braking system (ABS) if fitted.
- Lights: All lights, including headlights, brake lights, indicators and reflectors must be correctly positioned, working, and in good condition.
- Tyres and wheels: Testers check for correct tyre size, condition, and tread depth, which must be at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre’s tread and the entire outer circumference.
- Steering and suspension: The components are checked for excessive wear, corrosion, and damage.
- Exhaust and emissions: Emissions are measured to ensure they meet legal standards. The exhaust system is also checked for security and leaks.
- Bodywork and structure: The vehicle’s body and structure is inspected for excessive corrosion or damage and also checked for sharp edges that could cause injury.
- Seatbelts and seats: All mandatory seatbelts are checked for their condition, operation, and security. Seats are also checked.
- Driver’s view: The windscreen, wipers, and washers must provide a clear view of the road. Any significant chips or cracks in the windscreen can cause a failure.
Other components: The test also covers the horn, mirrors, fuel system, and vehicle identification number (VIN).
How to prepare your vehicle for your MOT
A few simple pre-checks can greatly improve your chances of passing the MOT and potentially save you money on repairs:
- Check your lights: Ensure all bulbs are working, including headlights, brake lights, indicators, and reversing lights.
- Inspect your tyres: Check for adequate tread depth (1.6mm minimum), pressure, and any visible damage.
- Top up fluids: Make sure your screen wash is topped up, as low levels can result in a failure.
- Clean your car: This one can easily be overlooked – a garage can refuse to test your vehicle if it is too dirty.
- Number Plates: Clean your number plates and clear any clutter.
- Test your horn: Give your horn a quick blast to ensure it works and is loud enough.
